Sylvia Matthews earned her degree in mathematics from The College of Charleston and her J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law, where she was a member of the Law Review, the Moot Court Bar, and the National Moot Court Team. Governor Perry first appointed Sylvia to serve as judge of the 281st District Court in December 2008. She was elected to a four-year term in 2010 and then re-elected in 2014. Sylvia is board certified in Civil Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and is an adjunct professor at the University of Houston Law Center.
